The ideal contract length for you depends on the type of tariff and phone you want, your budget, and on the flexibility you need.

A tariff with a lot of inclusive minutes/texts/data and an expensive new smartphone will be expensive, and you can reduce your initial and monthly costs by getting a longer contract. On the other hand, you will have to keep your tariff and phone for the length of the contract.

An 18 month contract strikes a nice balance between these different aspects - it offers a decent amount of discount compared to a PAYG or 12 month deal, but at the same time gives you more freedom than the really long contracts that are standard now.
