The appeal of a 24 month contract is simple: if you want to spend less right now, and pay less each month, then a longer contract will help you spread out the cost of a phone deal.

This means that you can get more with your phone deal than you would with a shorter contract.

The downside is clear - you have to be happy with what you have for the next 2 years. But by agreeing to a longer contract, you get your reward in the form of more minutes/texts/data, or a better phone, or an expensive free gift. If you're willing to give up flexibility in order to get more up front, then a 24 month contract will work for you.
